Best Portrait Photography Locations in Fort Collins
Fort Collins is quietly one of the best portrait towns in Colorado. You get walkable historic architecture, the Cache la Poudre River, foothills that glow at golden hour, and big open plains, often within a fifteen-minute drive of one another. As I get to know the area, these are the spots I'm most excited to use with clients, and how I'd love to shoot each one. Tap any location name or photo to open it in Google Maps.
Old Town

The brick storefronts, string lights, and tucked-away alleys of Old Town give portraits an effortless editorial feel. It's my go-to for senior portraits and couples who want a relaxed, urban look without driving out of town.
- Best light: early morning before the crowds, or the hour before sunset
- Great for: seniors, couples, headshots with character
- Tip: the alley off Linden Street stays shaded and even all afternoon
Horsetooth Reservoir

For wide-open golden-hour drama, nothing beats the foothills west of town. The reservoir overlooks are unbeatable for engagement and maternity sessions, with warm backlight rolling off the water.
Plan to arrive about ninety minutes before sunset: the drive up, parking, and a short walk eat more time than you'd expect, and the best light is the last twenty minutes.
Lory State Park

Just past the reservoir, Lory State Park trades the crowds for meadows, red-rock outcrops, and quiet trails. It's a favorite for natural, unhurried sessions where we can wander a little and let the real moments happen.
Lee Martinez Park

Easygoing green space along the Cache la Poudre River, Lee Martinez Park is perfect for family sessions with little ones and grandparents alike. Open lawns, shade trees, and the river path keep things relaxed and flexible.
CSU Campus

The Oval and the tree-lined walks of Colorado State are a meaningful backdrop for senior and graduation portraits, especially for new grads who want their campus in the frame. It glows in early fall when the leaves start to turn.
The foothills and open spaces

When you want big Colorado skies and warm evening light, the trails up Horsetooth Mountain deliver. The open spaces are made for couples and adventurous portraits who want space, sky, and a little solitude in their images.
A few planning notes
- Golden hour is worth scheduling around. I build nearly every session around the hour after sunrise or before sunset.
- Permits: larger parks and open spaces may require a photo permit for professional sessions, and I handle that as part of planning.
- Layer your wardrobe for the foothills; the temperature drops fast once the sun dips behind the ridge.
